Swapping (trading) 4s

This is when each player solos for 4 bars. There are two main options.

1. A 4-bar solo from each pitched instrument alternates with 4-bar solos from the drummer. This allows the drummer more participation.

2. A musician solos for 4 bars and then passes to the next player. This is sometimes described as ‘swapping 4s round the band.’

I began this section by suggesting that many of these decisions can be made before starting each tune. In reality, much can be sorted out whilst playing. For example, the bandleader might hold up four fingers and point to the drums to initiate swapping 4’s. If the leader points to his/her head during the final solo, this means ‘back to the head,’ in other words, return to the melody.
